Death of Merv Andrews

The death has been announced of Medway Band's respected baritone player Merv Andrews.

The Medway Band has informed 4BR of the death of their solo baritone player Merv Andrews following a short illness. He was aged 80.

First class bandsman

A spokesperson told 4BR: "Merv was the epitome of a first class bandsman and an inspiration and example to many. He will be sorely missed by all but not least by his family to whom we send our condolences."

Born in the Forest of Dean, Merv moved to Chatham to join the Royal Engineers Band, where he served for many years with distinction. He became was one of the longest serving members of the Medway Band, as player and occasional conductor.

Dedication

The spokesperson added: "He also played with Hoo Silver Band under the late, great Eric Ball. He was a superb player, musician and bandsman, whose example of dedication was shown in everything that he undertook."

Funeral arrangements

The funeral will take place on Wednesday 11th September, at noon at the Garrison Church, Brompton, Gillingham. Interment will follow at the Army Cemetery on Star Hill.

A wake will be held at the Masonic Centre, Franklin Road, Gillingham, at 2pm approx.
